Edinburgh Day 2

Woke up to rain. Ah well, it's Scotland.  Jumped on the on/off bus and went to Edinburgh Castle.  The views were spectacular as the castle sits atop an extinct volcano overlooking the city.

Great fortifications and defense.  Pretty impressive with many other buildings within the compound.  One was the New Barracks built in 1799 to house 600 soldiers and 3 officers.  It is now the Headquarters of the Royal Regiment of Scotland and the Regimental Headquarters and Museum of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Grays).
Their is also a memorial within the castle dedicated to  the memory of Scots who fell between 1914 and 1918 during the years of the Great War.

I found this and the Dragoon Museum to be the best features of this visit.

Following this we had lunch in The Deacons house cafe.

He was a cabinet maker and also a thief and something of a drinker, who was caught thieving and fled to Amsterdam.  He was apprehended and ultimately hanged.

On to St Giles Cathedral.

Also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, it sits on the Royal Mile between the Castle and the Palace of Holyrood House.  It is the Mother Church of Presbyterianism.  It is beautiful, especially the stained glass windows.  No pictures allowed without a permit.  But well worth the visit.  As we were entering, a wedding party was arriving in a bentley.
We jumped back on the bus and headed over to Waverly train station to purchase tickets to the town of Stirling for tomorrow and our tickets to Aberdeen and then from Glasgow to the Lake District in England.  Cheaper if you buy in advance, so of course there was a line to stand in.
One last stop at the Portrait Gallery before heading back to the apartment.  It was a quite beautiful building.  Everything from Portraits of Mary Queen of Scotts and the Dukes of Argyle to photo Portraits of Vanessa Redgrave, the actress and Oscar Pistorius at his arraignment.

We have walked our legs off again.  Going home for a big glass of wine.
