As soon as we crossed the bridge it started to rain and it rained and rained and rained. On our way we saw this little water fall. After all the rain on our way back, this one was a torrent. We musst have seen a hundred or more waterfulls cascading off the mountains.
We drove to the top of the island and got out in the rain to take some pictures and visited a Croft Museum (a croft is a landholding that is either rented or owned by a crofter) where we donned our rain gear to see the old croft. There are modern crofters still on the island, but most have built more comfortable homes.
Each of the buildings represented different trades or crafts, such as a smithy, a barn, and a weaving hut, etc. One was the two room house for the crofter and his family.
After that we decided we had had enough wt and headed back for home. The road around the top of the island didn't even pretend to be a two lane road. It just had these little pullouts where one car could pull over a litlle to let an oncoming car pass. I was driving and it was tedious to say the least. Ah well, it is Scotland and we have had great weather up until today, but it sure made a day of it. We stopped at a Invergarry at a hotel restaurant called The Brasserie and t turned out to be a wonderful birthday dinner. The girls treated me and that made up for the hairy drive and put a happy note on a pretty dreary day. The food was delicious and we celebrated with two wonderful desserts, the Chef's special pie made with banana's and Stickey Toffee Pudding. Yum. He stuck a candle in the pie. One of our best meals yet.
My birthday pie
I still haven't seen one of those hairy Highland cows. Well I did see one the other evening on our way in, but it was laying down and I only caught a glimpse. It was gone next time we passed, so it could have been my imagination. It was still raining when we got back to the B&B. A good day anyway.
